How to Choose the Right Toothpaste and Floss for Your Kids

Posted Dec 6th, 2016

Picking the right toothpaste and floss for your kids may not as easy as you think because there are a number of pointers to take into consideration to make brushing and flossing effective for you and your kids.

What sort of toothpaste should children use?

Ensure to use toothpaste that is made particularly for kids to confirm the appropriate fluoride levels. Kids up to 3 years old are recommended to use toothpaste with a fluoride level of 1000 ppm (parts per million). Children above 3 years old must use toothpaste with a fluoride level of 1350 ppm-1500 ppm. The fluoride level can be seen on the toothpaste's package. It is important that supervision is observed when kids are brushing to minimize swallowing.

Fluoride can aid in strengthening teeth from decay; however, if you are not sure about fluoride toothpaste, you can always seek expert advice.

Kids like to brush more if they have flavoured toothpaste. Know what flavour your kids like best or you can consider letting them pick the flavour.

Should children floss?

It is imperative to build good oral care practice at an early age. Kids must be encouraged to floss at an early age as soon as they can do it; however, supervision is a must to avoid hurting their gums. Same with brushing, kids must be supervised when they floss.

Floss also comes in various flavours, and picking the right one that your kid will like may help when it comes to flossing before going to sleep.

When picking the right floss for your kid, it is advisable to go for the soft, flexible type, which will be easy on their gums. Ribbon floss is also recommended since it is quite wide.

Your kid must start visiting a Vancouver Pediatric dentist regularly as soon as his or her first tooth pops out. The initial dental visit is a perfect time to ask questions and get advice for the right products for your kid.

By choosing the right products, you can make sure your kids’ teeth and gums stay healthy.
