How to straighten your child’s teeth without braces?

Posted Jul 5th, 2016

Three out of four children have imperfectly developed jaws and crowded teeth. These problems can be identified as early as four years old.

However, due to expensive orthodontic treatments in Vancouver that ranges from $3,000 to $7,000, not to mention the strange look that conventional orthodontic provide, it’s not a surprise that parents want their kids to have straight teeth without going for braces.

Parents wanting their kids to have straight teeth have a number of options. There’s no natural way of getting straight teeth, so to explore the options for your kids, an orthodontics specialist must be hired.

Straighten Teeth without Braces

Minor dental problems like teeth overcrowding or widening a small mouth, certain methods can be utilized. Below are few teeth-straightening appliances that can be used:

  • Retainers – these come in a number of styles that are mostly removable. They are shaped to fit the mouth of your kid and may slowly shift to a straightened position.
  • The Herbst Appliance – this certain tool can aid in fixing spacing problems can correct misaligned jaw issues. It’s done by attaching the lower and upper jaws using a metal extension. The orthodontist will gradually adjust the appliance through the year.
  • Palatal Expander – this device is used to aid in widening the arch of the upper teeth to create space for other adult teeth. This sometimes aids in overcrowded teeth.

These options are cheaper compared to the braces and can be removed for certain periods and still be effective.

Other options to traditional braces like the retainer are sufficient to help straighten teeth that are slightly misaligned. Another quick fix is the contouring, which involves cutting thin layers of the tooth’s enamel or known as veneers. Contouring is merely effective for people with minor misalignments.

The degree of orthodontic needs of every patient relies on a number of factors, like the degree of teeth misalignment, palette shapes, dental history and the capability of your kid to comply with the Vancouver pediatric dentist. Remember that while a family or general dentist can offer pieces of advice on straightening teeth, only orthodontists can give a comprehensive assessment of the needs of your child and teeth straightening options.
